Why let a great technology languish? Sometimes, a TTO concludes that it can’t monetize a researcher’s invention. (There are lots of reasons why this might be the case).
As noted in AUTM’s Guidelines for Balancing Stakeholder Interests, when a TTO “declines or discontinues commercialization efforts for an invention and the inventors wish to continue to pursue commercialization at their own expense, the [TTO] should give access to the necessary rights to do so."
